An Open Letter from Sandra Zee

Hi! My name is Sandra Zee and welcome to the official Sandra Zee page on the web. I am a pop culture expert, media personality, XM Radio Host, web host and professor. I currently appear on various TV, Radio and Web shows as a pop culture expert.

In 2007, I was a contestant on the Canadian version of

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. I was chosen out of 5700 applicants to be one of nine contestants. A true indication of my abilities to connect to the audience. I walked away from that experience, $100,000 richer and with the hopes of parlaying my successes into a television career.

In December 09, I launched my web-based show: PopC with SandraZee on YouTube and have since garnered quite a following from my fans. In the process of creating this show, I have been approached by many fans who desire to see me live out my dreams on television.

I have extensive experience in teaching Pop Culture at the post-secondary level and would use my expertise coupled with my love of everything TV to bring a fresh and new perspective to the viewing audience. My goal is for The Sandra Zee Show to become an internationally recognized TV, Radio and Web program.

With much love,

Sandra Zee

Catch me as the Media Expert on Season Three of Plastic Makes Perfect on SLICE!

The PopC with SandraZee Web Show:

Episode One: “Sexting”

Synopsis: Sexting’s got a lot of people in trouble lately. Tiger Woods, Miley Cyrus, Anna Faris and thousands of teens have discovered that sending racy, explicit and XXX-rated text messages can often come back to bite you later. So why do people do it? Don’t they know that SMS isn’t private and easily forwarded? What is it about our culture that both encourages and then penalizes celebrities for having sex lives?

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about sexting and celebrity. If you’ve ever had a naughty text message exchange – or just wonder “why?”, Sandra Zee’s got answers.

Episode Two: Celebrity Culture – Representation and the “Ideal”

Synopsis: Why are we obsessed with celebrities and celebrity culture? Why are we so fascinated with the current affairs of: Tiger Woods, Charlie Sheen, The Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and the cast of Jersey Shore?

What is it about their lives that we crave? We watch their movies and television shows, we download their music, we buy the magazines that feature them, we follow their every move on gossip blogs. We love them at one moment and loathe them the next – are we not voyeurs of celebrity culture?

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about celebrity culture – representation and the “ideal.” If you’ve ever scanned a tabloid magazine or read an online gossip blog to get the latest scoop on your favourite celeb – or just wonder “why?”, Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode Three: Jersey Shore

Synopsis: What happens on the Jersey Shore, stays on the Jersey Shore! GTL + the Fist Pump = a great hit for MTV. The show revolves around a group of self-proclaimed guidos and guidettes who spent the summer of 2009 living together and having their lives taped. .

Jersey Shore has the world talking and Sandra Zee intrigued. From Snooki to Mike “The Situtation” and DJ Pauly D, the characters we love to watch and even more so, love to talk about. So why do we love this show so much? Why are we talking about it? Why do we care?

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about all the excitement surrounding Jersey Shore. If you’ve ever wondered why you watch – or just wonder “why?” – Sandra Zee has the answers.

Watch as Sandra Zee demonstrates the fist pump you will not want to miss this episode!!

Episode Four:   Facebook

Synopsis: Add to Friends? What’s your Status? An Examination of Making Cyber Friends and Building and Breaking Online Relationships on Facebook. The impact of Facebook can be felt around the world. Users are posting pictures, joining groups, updating their status and announcing their relationships and breakups. But why?

Why are we so obsessed and addicted to Facebook? What is it about Facebook that make us announce our personal lives to the mass public? Why are we such snoopers on Facebook? Why do we care so much about how other people are living?

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about the various ways we use Facebook. If you’ve ever wondered why you happen to log in numerous times a day – or that your ex ended your relationship on the site before you had a chance to – or just wonder what photo of you will appear next on a friends page that you may have to untag –  Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode Five: Pregorexia

Synopsis: Pregorexia is when moms to be obsess over their weight and diet and exercise so much so that they may put the health of a baby in jeopardy. In essence, they are pregnant and anorexic. Some argue that Pregorexia was created by celebrities who seem to gain minimal weight while pregnant and are quick to bounce back to their pre-baby weight, if not even smaller. This is a serious problem as there are numerous health risks to the mom and to the baby.

How can we avoid this when we buy these magazines, surf celebrity blogs and follow the every move of our favourite celebrities? The reason why pregorexia is becoming such a fixed image in popular culture is because of the influence of these skinny celebrities. We see their before birth and the day after and they look super human. They fit right back into that skinny pair of jeans or perfect little black dress (LBD).

The scary thing here is that besides the distinct possibility of affecting the fetus and post-baby birth, children see this and may want to emulate their parents eating habits/physical activities. What we have now is a culture obsessed with thinness and being part of this ideal. What we do not want and should not aim for is an unhealthy image and message to young boys and girls that in order to be happy and have friends, you have to be skinny at all costs.

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about the causes and impact of Pregorexia on young women today. If you have ever wondered why certain celebrities look so good pregnant or how they have bounced back so quickly after pregnancy or just wonder why we live in a culture obsessed with being thin and fitting into an ideal – Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode 6: The Olympics: Post-Show

Synopsis: Much has been said about Canada’s performance at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver – controversy over the “Own to the Podium” emerged. What is this? Why should we care about our performance to the world?

After watching the Olympics, I wonder why the Canadian Olympic Team and others were placing so much emphasis on medal count instead of supporting our athletes in their endeavors? It is an amazing feat and accomplishment to make it to the Olympics and to be an Olympic athlete. I wonder if the “Own the Podium” campaign intent was to create controversy? Because it did.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympics were a spectacle of Canadian athleticism where we won a record number of gold medals and showed the world that we are Canadian! But are we? The portrayal of natives during the opening ceremonies merely as “performers” and “entertainers” diminish our role in the colonization of their land.

Canada was built on native land. It was just recently that the Canadian government apologized for the Native Residential School System that mandated all natives to be taught in a separate space. It was an exclusionary process. The way natives were portrayed in the opening ceremonies shows an utter lack of respect and connection, which is very un-Canadian of us.

The Canadian Olympic team was comprised of very few visible minority athletes. What does this say to the world about Canada?

In the closing ceremonies, John Furlong the head of VANOC stated: “Our humble Canadian story … no one left out” but the lack of diversity among the Canadian athletes over these games is problematic. How can we maintain our vision of being a “mosaic” of multicultural people when we don’t accurately represent that scenario in our own Olympics? Where are all the visible minority athletes in the Winter games? We need to ensure inclusion and that means increased funding and support to all potential athletes.

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about the Canadian representation and “performance” at the Vancouver Winter Olympics and the future of our athletes. If you have ever wondered how we can live in a country so obsessed with hockey, curling and other sports yet our Olympic athletes are not supported the way they should –  Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode 7: Reality TV Overload

Synopsis: Why are we so obsessed with Reality TV? What is it about Reality TV that makes us glued to the set and makes the networks “jump” at the chance to make this form of programming? In the case of American Idol, WE follow the hopes and dreams of potential singers and we comment on their victories and poke fun at their downfall. We feel a sense of connection to many of the characters on the show.

In fact, we sometimes get lost and believe it to be true, thus the term “reality” takes into effect. We laugh when the audition goes really bad, or smile when we hear an amazing rendition of a song, and at times, root for the underdog. We take these characters into our homes and have them join our families and become our friends.

But what really excites me about the show with its pre-constructed set and definable moments is the “unexpected” and that is what makes people talk. Last year, that was Adam Lambert’s creativity and dynamic approach and this year, it has really been all about “Pants the Ground.”

As much as reality TV appears real it is still scripted and highly formulaic. Thus the case with The Bachelor series. It represents the extent to which people will go to find “love” so to speak. Some regard it as a glorified porn fest in its outwardly exhibitionist forms of affection to and from the bachelor / bachelorette

Some call it boring, redundant and formulaic programming that starts with 25 girls/25 guys and one potential mate. I call it pure genius in that people are interested in what is going on – we are like voyeurs watching, gazing, wishing, dreaming that we were in that position, or that we had that, or that we were – the ONE.

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about Jake and Vienna and how their courtship was built on sexual connection and television viability. The real interesting issue with American Idol and The Bachelor is those unexpected moments that make these shows and reality TV truly captivating – Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode 8: The Dating Dilemma

Synopsis: Are you currently in a relationship? Looking for one? Or want to find the ONE? Are you happy? Do you feel content? Are you at a point in your life when having someone there would enrich it, not secure it?

This episode examines what I refer to as: The Dating Dilemma.

People have said to me over and over again how hard it is to find the right person. Many of my friends are using the online dating world as a way to possibly find the “right” one. Don’t be discouraged! Navigating through the profiles of many “would be” potential suitors involves discipline and dedication. The world has changed. More of us are using the online dating scene as a way to meet people. A recent study found that US citizens are projected to spend over 900 million in online dating in the year 2011. That’s a lot of money being spent on people dating!! Gone are the days when people meet casually at a corner store, at the coffee shop they frequent or at the bookstore perusing the latest novel. The process of sitting in front of our computers and setting up a profile about ourselves can be a daunting task. Do we tell the truth about what we are looking for? How we look? Are we accurate in revealing our age/height and weight?

Do we claim to love long walks on the beach when in fact we don’t even live near one and furthermore, don’t like to venture outside unless it is for the latest film, exclusive restaurant or a friends party. Do we say that money doesn’t mean anything and we prefer independence when in fact, we like to be taken out and deep inside have feelings of anger if someone suggests we “split the bill” or that we cover it?!?!

Why do we continue to deceive people and ourselves about who we are, what we are looking for and what we have to offer? Is it because we feel that if we told the “truth” they won’t like us? Or if we reveal too much – they might be scared off? What are the “real” reasons why so many of us seem to be afraid to show our true colours?

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion in regards to the societal pressures that are with us from the beginning that places great emphasis on men and women living up to an “ideal” that means looking good, making lots of money, taking care of the home and having the total package. Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode 9: Flitter Parties

Synopsis: Twitter + Flirting = Flitter Parties which has become the new and innovative way of dating.

With the emergence of Twitter as a microblogging / social networking site, it has become a natural extension for busy, young professionals to attend Flitter Parties and send tweets on their mobile devices as a way of interacting instantly among potential mates.

“Flitter Parties are an excellent way for normally shy and reserved individuals to let go of their inhibitions and ‘open up’ and show interest because the assumption is no one is watching your body language,” says Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Expert.

While flitter parties and speed dating events are billed as time sensitive in interactions, the biggest difference is – tweeters at flitter parties can maintain a form of anonymity when sending and responding to messages. The premise of speed dating events is to quickly meet a potential date and sum up your qualifications and interests.

“The dating industry generates millions of dollars and microblogging/social networking sites should pay close attention, as Torontonians are showing that Flitter Parties are here to stay,” says Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Expert.

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about Flitter Parties and the impact on dating in 2010 – Sandra Zee has the answers.

Episode 10: SEX REHAB – The New HOT Addiction –

Synopsis: Sex Addiction is all the rage now in Hollywood. So many celebrities are claiming that they are sex addicts and need REHAB.

Is sex addiction a serious issue for celebrities? Or are these celebrities (like Tiger Woods, Jesse James among others) using it as an EXCUSE to appear favourably in the eyes of the audience so that we can feel sorry for them? This way anytime a celebrity cheats, they can say: I have a problem and I cant help it.

I believe that Sex Rehab is the new HOT addiction and the new excuse for getting caught in the cookie jar. After researching sex rehab programmes and clinics in the US celebrities can pay upwards of $40,000 to seek help in battling their sex addiction. My issue with celebrities using sex rehab as a crutch can do more harm than good.

Even those that are victims of adulterous husbands / boyfriends etc., are portrayed at times as weak and are seen as forgiving. We still dont know what will ultimately happen to various sex rehab Hollywood patients and their significant others what is known, is that this sex rehab addiction will definitely spill over to mainstream culture.

No matter what, there will be more adulterers in Hollywood.

Join Sandra Zee, Pop Culture Icon and expert for a startlingly frank discussion about the seriousness of Sex Addiction and the ways in which celebrities use Sex Rehab as a way of dealing with the addiction. If you have ever wondered how these celebrities cheat, or how they dont or do get caught, you will want to tune in. Sandra Zee has the answers.
